Assassination in a Roleplay Game

Its been said to me that assassins are too limited as far as roleplaying goes. Well, I disagree. There are so many difference concepts available that I cannot see what the problem is. For example:
- Hired Muscle
- Ninja
- Mafia/Yakuza/etc Hitman
- Assassin who has lost their memory
- Reformed assassin
- Noble/Royal assassin
- Out-for-vengence daughter/son of victim
Possibly the most crucial part of any assassin is their motivations. Why do they do it? Common ones might be greed, vengeance, survival, insanity or perhaps even loyalty (as for Mafia hitmen). Frequently assassins are portrayed as cold and emotionless, but few people can murder in cold blood. Normally it takes passion and adrenaline (and fear?) to get someone to pull the trigger. When roleplaying an assassin you have to understand why your character does what they do and how they live with themselves every day.
